Council Elections 2024

Glen Eira Vote 2024, with abstracted ward shapes

Overview

This October, we have the opportunity to elect councillors who are committed to supporting active transport, safety, housing, and green spaces in our community. Your vote can make a difference – this is our chance to elect progressive candidates who will take meaningful action to make our city a better place.

As part of a statewide campaign, we’ve teamed up with Streets People Love to score candidates based on their views on these key issues.

This will be the first Glen Eira City Council election under the new ward structure, with 9 wards each electing 1 councillor. If you're unsure which ward you live in, you can check on the VEC website

Voting will be conducted via post, with ballot packs sent out by the VEC from 7th October. Make sure to return your ballot before the voting deadline of 6pm, Friday 25th October.

Candidates

We’ve reached out to all candidates to complete our survey, aiming to understand their priorities and gauge their support on crucial issues like active transport, housing, and green space. Many current councillors are running again, and we've evaluated their performance over the last council term.

Current Councillor Performance

We found that Councillors Athanasopoulos, Karslake, and Zhang consistently supported creating a more sustainable and livable city.

We’ve rated the performance of sitting councillors based on key votes during their term that relate to building a safe, liveable, and sustainable city.

Our assessment covers 12 critical issues, including climate action, active transport infrastructure, city greening, and housing strategies. Larger issues, such as the construction of bike lanes, were given greater weight.

To ensure fairness, we’ve adjusted scores for councillors who were absent or had a conflict of interest in certain votes. For example, if a councillor missed 2 out of 12 votes, their total score is calculated out of 10 instead of 12.

You can view our full calculations here.

We understand that Councillors Karslake, Zhang, Pennicuik, Magee, Zmood, Cade, Esakoff and Parasol will stand for reelection.

* Cr Karslake was elected late in the council term, therefore has been present for significantly less votes than other Councillors.
