Glen Huntly To Caulfield Bicycle Link

Background

As part of the Glen Huntly level crossing removal, the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has committed to building a bicycle link between Glen Huntly and Caulfield Stations. This will facilitate future works to connect the Frankston Rail Trail to the Djerring Trail.

Glen Eira City Council and LXRP engaged with the community in January 2024 on two options for a safe bicycle route along Queens Avenue. Despite most of the community supporting a protected on-road bike lane, Councillors rejected this proposal and did not endorse any option. Consequently, LXRP has now presented additional options along Derby Crescent.

What are the options?

There are now a total of six options under consideration, including the previous two options on Queens Avenue.

Which options should I support?

Streets Alive Glen Eira has evaluated the options based on factors such as safety, directness, and preservation of greenery. We continue to advocate for a protected on-road bi-directional bike lane on Queens Avenue (option 6), as we believe it offers the best balance of these considerations. Our previous assessment of parking on Queens Avenue revealed significant underutilisation, making it an ideal candidate for a safe bike route. Other protected options include option 1 and option 5.

What’s next?

You can share your preferred options on the Council's website until Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Council will convene on May 21st to decide which option they will support. If Council endorses one of the options, LXRP will commence works in mid-2024, with the bike path expected to be completed by the end of the year.
